Reaction to Chapter1【Mia】

The first impression I had when I read chapter 1 of the novel "The Glass Castle" written by Jeannette Walls" was that the way the story is presented is rather peculiar: not once does the author describe the characters' background in clear words, but implies the position and personality of the characters from their clothes and behavior. This may be true of any literary work. However, I felt that this piece of literature is particularly interesting because it gives the reader a sense of the emotional movements of the characters through the detailed description of their movements.

Although I am still reading chapter 1, my impression of one theme of the story, "what do you value in life", is that the difference in thinking between mothers and daughters may be born of their age rather than the different environments in which they grew up. Jeannette has a husband and a different new life away from her mother. She still has a long life ahead of her and wants to lead a successful life in society. Her mother, on the contrary, has left Jeannette on her own and is moving into a new phase of her life. The mother is trying to apply the many mistakes she made when she was about her daughter's age to her current life, which is why she is living a life that is not obsessed with money or fame. In other words, maybe this mother used to live a wealthy life and is tired of the cruelty of it. But either way, I thought that people want to live an unencumbered life somewhere even though they think money is not the best thing, and they also live with a need for self-approval.
